Tata’s Very Own Croma Laptop

Tata has recently launched its very own laptop under its existing retain store’s name which is Croma. These Croma laptops will be available throughout Tata’s retail stores. This is the first time that Tata has set its foot on a PC or laptop segment. With this Croma laptop we the consumers have had to add one more brand of laptop in the list of laptops to choose on which one to buy. It will be mostly be sold through Croma Stores.

The Croma laptops start from the price range of Rs. 32,999, which is the home basic model, and above. The home series laptops priced at Rs. 32,999 comes with a Pentium Dual Core processor and comes bundled with the Home basic Windows Vista OS. Next, level they are targeting is the advanced users and this is priced at Rs. 42,999 and above and comes with Windows Vista Home Premium OS as well as with Core 2 Duo processor.

Their laptops are contracted through Zenith to assemble it in India. It means that only the brand is associated as Tata Laptop or Croma Laptop, but the entire infrastructure and assembling and details is provided by Zenith, although they do it with the specifications and requirements from Tata. It will be interesting to see how Croma Laptop fares among the whole lot of other well known brands who have established a firm ground in India when it comes to Laptops. But with Tata Brand associated to this laptop, you will never know, they soon might be among the top brands in Laptops in India. They have the potential both in terms of infrastructure (here the retail stores) and brand name. But as a thumb rule, everything will be decided by the performance and if they could achieve it, they are on the right path.

You can also report the loss of your card or any other documents or cards that you have insured with the card protection plan through a 24-hour CPP helpline. They will help you out in getting the cards replaced and will block it if needed.

You can even register y our important documents using this Card Protection Plan like your driving license, passport, and even your insurance policies and much more which you feel is important and valuable.

You also get other benefits along with the CPP or card protection plan. Among them you get worldwide cover, fraud protection for your cards and important documents that you register, reminder stickers, CPP key fob as well as retrieval service.

The plan charges starts from Rs. 3 per day and will increase depending upon the number of cards or documents you protect using this plan. You will need call your HSBC helpline numbers to know more details about it.

LIC Jeevan Varsha - Review

Keeping in mind the current economic downturn and the cash crunch, insurance and mutual fund companies have devised various innovative products to keep up with the times. The LIC Jeevan Varsha is one such plan that has been launched recently so as to give a guaranteed return in contrast to plans that were earlier launched which involved market risks. This plan was launched on the 16th of February 2009, and offers a guaranteed return with survival benefit. This is a short term plan that LIC offers between 16th Feb 2009 to 31 Mar 2009. Jeevan Varsha is a close ended money back plan and is a combination of high risk coverage and investment. It is not an Unit linked plan.

LIC has formulated the plan to make it unique and attractive to its customers. The plan is a guaranteed addition on our investment where LIC guarantees a certain amount of return independent of the fluctuation that occurs in interest rates in the market. This does away with speculation and gives you sure returns. Another benefit in the plan is that it promises a share in the profits that are made by the plan. The money invested by us can also be withdrawn at any time for various other commitments or investments. The main attraction of the plan is that the life insurance coverage for the full sum insured will be available even after the survival benefits have been drawn. Loan is also available on the policy at 9% S.I.

There are two policy terms available with LIC’s Jeevan Varsha, for either 9 years or 12 years. The guaranteed return in the 9 yr term is at 6.5% of the sum assured and at 7% S.I in the 12 yr plan. But in both the policies the premium needs to be paid for 9 years. Where the policy has a lot of benefits it has some drawbacks too. The primary one being that on evaluation the policy gives a very low return although LIC claims otherwise. For the policy to be more viable, it will need to have compounded returns which are equal to the guaranteed addition figure and for this to be possible the premium amount will have to be 20% lower than what we pay. Being brought up on at the right time, i.e., during the tax planning time of the year, Jeevan Varsha could just be another success story for LIC, only time will tell the story, though.

Use Any Bank's ATM for Free from April 2009 in India

It really has come as a boon to us, the bank customers, who can use any bank’s ATMs from April 1, 2009. Thus from April 1, you can use your ATM or debit card to access any bank’s ATM machine, be it a nationalised banks or any private bank’s ATM across India, no matter where you live or which bank’s ATM card you use. Thus saving you an additional Rs. 20 every time you use any other bank’s ATM to withdraw money, previously it used to be around Rs. 60 for withdrawal from other bank’s ATMs.

RBI has instructed the banks on the same some time back and which will be implemented from this April.

This move will surely help us in a lot of way, one is that we don’t have to search or run around places to find our bank’s ATM wherever we go and also if in case we had to withdraw money from other bank’s ATM you will not be incurred with any service charge (currently Rs. 20) at all.

Now there was an order that there will not be any charge for checking balance in any ATM and with this new move from April 1, 2009, you will never ever have to worry about any ATM charges being levied to you for usage. Reserve Bank of India has also instructed banks to never charge any charge for using own ATMs henceforth using your ATM or debit cards. But you will be levied with charges if you use your credit card for the same.

Apart from benefiting the customers this move will also benefit a lot to the new and smaller banks who have far less ATMs to use.

I personally feel that this is a customer oriented move which would surely benefit us in a long way. This will also considerably reduce the crowd or queue on banks which has huge customer base or less ATMs. It will also save us fuel too, so that we don’t have to drive long distances to find our bank’s ATM.

RBI has told that this practice of accessing any bank’s ATM across all banks have been in practice in U.S. and Europe and the same has been implemented here in India keeping the customers in focus. Great and welcome move RBI.

Manhattan Credit Card Review

Manhattan credit card is from the house of Standard Chartered credit card. It actually has all the benefits and usage terms to that of the regular Standard Chartered credit cards. It was introduced to India only some years back. And Manhattan Credit Cards also get the credit of being the India’s first life-time free credit card. Yes, they have done it even before ICICI Bank had started it. And that is how they could actually acquire a significant amount of customer base during that time period.

It comes in two options either a regular credit card or the Manhattan Platinum credit card. Although it was introduced first as a life-time free credit some years back but it also came along with a disadvantage of not having any rewards points option. Yes, Manhattan credit cards in India does not come with the regular rewards points or gifts options. This is one major drawback that it had. Although not having the rewards catalogue could have been justified by way of being a lifetime free credit card but now since very many credit card issuing banks have come up with lifetime free credit cards, Manhattan card without having the rewards accumulation option would in fact turn out to be a big drawback for them now.

They also had a far less interest rates for the unpaid balance on the card when it was introduced in India, but of late they have raised their interest rates to on par to that of other credit cards.

Just like Standard Chartered credit cards, you can make the payments of Manhattan Credit Cards at the Standard Chartered Banks or ATMs, but they have a separate customer service number and website, etc. Although you can even call the Standard Chartered customer service number to get to know the details or update the details of your Manhattan Credit Card.

This card was initially targeted at youths as you get to get details about the most happening places trekking, watch movies, go to a rock show through SMS alerts especially for this card.

Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic touch phone

This is certainly not an answer to Apple’s iPhone but Nokia’s 5800 Xpress music is a smart touch screen phone. It may be Nokia’s music phone but it has all the features of a high end phone. Being a Nokia friendly nation, India had been waiting for it for months. At last Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic was launched recently in India. It surely has that iPhone look on the outset.

It is a stylish phone with a very ‘Nokia’ kind of look to it… black and red colors of Xpress Music family. Like 5310 of the same series, this handset is not shiny. It is thick and longish to look at. Front panel is black, and has only three buttons; call, end, and menu buttons. There is a touch sensitive media button on the right side of the phone above the display, which is not very important. Another feature, which some of you may not, but is a useful one, is an unlock key on the side.

The touch screen is responsive and you can navigate and scroll through menu easily with your fingers or the stylus which is tucked away at the back of the phone. Though screen is not as responsive as an iphone and you have to apply pressure sometimes to make the phone act. With a built in accelerometer, you can view the pages in a landscape or a portrait mode. The interface is simple; Nokia users will find it familiar.

Music capability of the phone is top notch… it has to be. The music player lets you search through music tracks using your finger by scrolling up and down the list. The sound quality, storage space is great. The phone has a 3.5 mm headphone jack also to plug in your headphones. 3.2 mega pixels camera is good to take still photos and make videos which you can share later with your friends on facebook! The phone has got Wi-Fi support, Bluetooth, GPS, memory card slot, and almost everything which a high end phone has.

Anybody who wants a touch phone with great features and who does not want to feel intimidated by it too, then this is could be the phone and of course with the Nokia advantage.

HDFC Bank My City Benefit Card

HDFC Bank Credit Card has introduced the My City Benefit Card which either comes as add-on card along with your existing HDFC Bank Gold Credit Card or can be gotten as an individual credit card. One major difference with HDFC Bank MyCity Credit Card is its size. Yes, the size of this card is only half of what a regular credit card will look like. Hence giving it a sleek and compact look making it an ideal card to keep in your wallet. It is actually a Visa Mini Card which is actually 43% smaller than the regular credit cards.

Some of the exclusive benefits you get along with HDFC My City Credit Card are 0% surcharge on petrol bills, 1.5% cash back on utility payments, and EMI Benefit.

With the 0% surcharge benefit you will not be charged of the 2.5% surcharge which most other credit cards charge, when you use your credit card at petrol stations. Thus saving you additional 2.5% on surcharge when compared to other credit cards. This is applicable for petrol usage from Rs. 400 to Rs. 25,000 only and available at any petrol pumps.

You also get 1.5% cash back on utility, Visa Bill pay, and Smartpay payments through the HDFC My City Benefit Card. This cash back is applicable for electricity, mobile, telephone, and insurance payments.

The EMI benefit is that you can automatically convert any spending above Rs. 5000 into an EMI for 12 months. There will be an interest rate of only 0.5% per month. Since if you have gotten this My City Benefit Card along with your existing HDFC Credit Card you should use your HDFC Mini Card if you want to convert your purchases into EMI automatically. This is because both your regular HDFC Bank Credit Card and MyCity Card will have the same credit card number if you have gotten it as an add-on card.

There will be no reward points accrued if you use any of the above options for your purchases. The credit limit of this card will be that of the primary credit card and hence does not have a separate credit limit for this credit card.

There will be a nominal one-time processing fee of Rs. 99 for each of the benefits and Rs. 299 for the EMI option described above which you can actually get it refunded or cancelled by calling the HDFC Bank Credit Card customer care and requesting to do so.

The appearance of this card comes with one of the prominent places of interest of your city embossed in the background. Since I live in Chennai, it came with the Chennai Central Railway Station (which actually is a heritage place) picture embossed on it, giving it a cool new look to the credit card. And thus you might get India Gate, Hoogly Bridge, etc for your respective cities you live on your card.

Apart from the cash back you get, which actually is a very useful option, I did not find any major difference from this My City Benefit Card and any other credit card apart from the size, of course.

Citibank First Citizen Credit Card

Citibank First Citizen Credit Card was India’s first retail co-branded card. It is a standard shopping card. With a first citizen Citibank card, you automatically get membership to the Shoppers’ Stop loyalty program. It permits you to enjoy special privileges like preview sales, discounts, home delivery of altered merchandises and priority billing at Shoppers’ Stop outlets. It combines the benefits of Shoppers’ Stop loyalty program and Citibank Credit card.

The Citibank First Citizen Credit card has no annual fee. It has zero % fuel surcharge at Indian Oil outlets. The interest rate is 2.95% per month and cash advance limit is Rs. 10000 at 2.5% transaction charge. On entry, you get Citibank First Citizen Silver edge card and making purchases of 40.000 Rs. in a year, the card holder is automatically upgraded to the Golden Glow membership.

For every 100 Rs. spent at Shoppers’ Stop, the user earns 4 reward points. On shopping at Shoppers’ Stop in-house brands, you can get an additional 1 point on every 100 Rs. purchase. Using the card at any other location also will earn one reward point to the cardholder. These are for Silver edge card holders. The Golden Glow card holders earn an additional two reward points for shopping at in-house brands of Shoppers’ stop, thus taking the point tally to 7 and otherwise at shopper’s stop, the Golden Glow card holder gets five reward points for every 100 Rs. purchase he makes. The monthly statement shows the reward points earned and these points are redeemable at all Shoppers’ Stop branches.

Apart from these benefits, the cardholder can enjoy benefits which Citibank card holders enjoy. The Golden Glow First citizen card holder can get and insurance cover of up to 20 lakh. For Silver Edge members, this limit is 10 lakh. Apart from these, card holder also gets airline travel benefits like checked baggage loss cover up to 40000 in India for Golden Glow cards.

NurseStation from Apollo Pharmacy

Apollo Pharmacy has started a new service from their existing pharmacies called NurseStation. With which you can get access to a nurse for all your minor medical needs such as injections, vaccinations, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, dressings, etc. This is the first of its kind service that is being offered in India. No other health services have come up with similar ones.

To elaborate, Nurse Station from Apollo Hospitals Group is a service offered from the Apollo Pharmacy where you will have a nurse present at your neighbourhood Apollo Pharmacy to help you in minor medical needs but of course with a fee. This NurseStation might just come in handy if you don’t want to spend more charge for getting appoints with doctors for your minor healthcare needs like injecting insulin, administering vaccinations for your kids, blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks, BMI checks, wound dressings, etc. Now you can get it done by well-trained nurses at your neighbourhood pharmacy.

You can also get their medical assistance at your home for those who would not be able to move out due to the health condition such as post surgery issues, bedridden patients, pregnancy, elderly care etc. You can just call your nearest Apollo Pharmacy for nurse on call for your medical assistance.

There will be a nurse or couple of nurses always stationed at the pharmacy at NurseStation Kiosk so that you can get access to them easily. You don’t have to worry about the inexperience of the nurses being attended, as most of these nurses are well trained by the Apollo Group themselves for their existing hospital services, although the nurses posted at the Nurse Station might just be a one who has just finished her training or something like that.

But according to me this is a great service to be offered especially there were times where you would need such emergency services for your home needs but wonder where to look for but now you have a dependable service to look for in such instances.

Some of the services that you can get from NurseStation are BP and blood sugar checks, vaccinations, checking BMI, injection needs like insulin, etc., wound dressings, and even counselling service. You can also book the appoints from the Apollo hospital doctors and even can book Ambulance service from there.

This service is available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. everyday. You can even avail services like dialysis, IV fluids, dressing and even pregnancy or infant care at your home for a charge.

I guess the price should be nominal for the service in which they are offering since I have not tried it yet. But to be frank, this is a welcome move by Apollo Group.

Passion DVD Player Review

I was very skeptical initially on buying this DVD player which was being sold at Big Bazaar and which I heard was their very own brand, although imported from China or Taiwan. But after reading so many reviews online, I thought to just give it a try. But to my surprise it was working just fine till now and its been six months since I brought it and till now no issues has occurred with it (touch wood)! Hence I have decided to write a review on this Passion DVD Player. The model which I brought was DVD – 3209P.

I was not a big fan of buying products which is slightly off-branded but since it was being sold at only Rs. 1390, I thought I would just give it a try. Although the sales person informed me that there were some issues with this model of DVD player and many complaints are being made, but I was totally unperturbed with such allegations and hence just brought it to try it.

It seems to play Divx, DVD, MP4, MP3, SVCD, ACD, DVD-RW, DVD-R, CD-R/RW, WMA, JPEG, and even picture CD. But when you compare it with the giants in this segment like Philips and Sony, the quality and looks may not be as good as them but performance wise I am very satisfied with it till now.

The Passion DVD Player that I brought had the function to play from USB Pendrives and hence it made my life a lot easier instead of burning all my movies into a DVD disk I could now copy it into my pen drive and play it directly on Passion.

It has the option of playing from where you left off, i.e., switched off the DVD but this function works only on the original CDs or DVDs, i.e. power resume/smart power control option. It stores the last played memory and plays from it automatically when you switch it on the next time. But you shouldn’t have removed your CD to make this function work.

It actually plays almost all CDs and DVDs burnt or brought and even those CDs which were beaten up like anything. Overall I am very pleased with this DVD player which I had brought six months after buying it.

The New Future Bazaar - Review

Future Bazaar which was famous for its down to earth pricing and cheap priced products catering to the need of all, has recently changed its image both on the looks as well as on the products they sell. Now, they have brought along with a premium look unlike their previous outlook which was simple and somewhat boring. Now with the change over they have really changed their entire look into a premium brand of sort. Which has the colors of purple, orange, yellow and more and is indeed really colorful. On the looks it scores well overall but will need to wait and watch on how they score on service and products they sell.

They have even changed their logo into a new one which I am not entirely sure what it signifies. The new FutureBazaar although has changed a lot but seems buggy still with not being able to login using the old password. I wonder why they changed their password of the existing users too. And when looking through I found an answer for it too. They have a separate section dedicated on how to use their new site too.

They have complete dropped their famous categories, i.e., the 99 store which they previously had before this makeover. Instead they have a new category or section called Featured Offers.

The have put up all their contact info for customer service prominently on their home page which is visible on just a single scroll unlike any other sites or shopping portals which would be obviously hidden or will be at the bottom of the page. All the categories are easily accessible from their home page.

They also have an unique section called “Selling Right Now” which are supposedly the products which are being sold at that moment or day or a particular time period or perhaps the products which are sold in large numbers.
